Latest Post Listening: Bryant Oden by Jim Christian

A buddy of mine decided to share his top ten songs of 2018 and invited everyone else to join in:

"Feel free to join in, there’s no real rules, just sharing your favourite songs of the year. Release dates don’t matter, how you share doesn’t matter, how many doesn’t matter."

Here's my Top 10 Tracks of 2018, - music that had a particular importance to me this year, or that I discovered for the first time. Most of these have one particular criteria, in that I sing it in the car, and I sing it loud.

10. The Werewolf by Paul Simon

While Wristband is one of the poppier/finger-snappier tracks off of Stranger to Stranger, The Werewolf has such a catchy off-beat rhythm, brilliant lyrics and a cacophony of instrumentation to catch you off guard.

9. Make Me Feel by Janelle Monae.

What a track that make me miss Prince, but happily listen to this in his absence.

8. How Sampling Transformed Music by Mark Ronson (TED)

Yeah, 8 isn't even a song. It's a TED Talk. I've been playing with samples and electronic music in the latter part of 2018 and came across this. Somehow, I'd missed some important hip-hop roots.

7. Feel Right by Mystikal / Mark Ronson

The criminally overlooked Uptown Funk B side (and better song IMO).

6. When the Saints Go Marching In by Louis Armstrong and Danny Kaye.

Doesn’t matter what year it is. This is my goto feelgood song from The Five Pennies.

5. The Man by The Killers

I heard this song for the first time just as I was supposed to be getting out of my car and doing something else. I stayed in for a few minutes to hear it out. I sing this one at the top of my lungs, every time.

4. Foo Fighters / Bobby Caldwell Live Looping by Elise Trouw

Late nights up watching OP-1 and looping synth music put this video in my YouTube recommends, and it's amazing.

3. Feel It Still ("Weird Al" Yankovic Remix) by Portugal. The Man

Yup, this exists. Get yer accordions out.

2. Castle On a Cloud / Bring Him Home - Les Miserables

I've always been a sucker for musicals, but not until I joined a choir in 2018 and had the opportunity to perform these pieces did I really appreciate them.

1. We Wish You a Merry Christmas / Ring Out the Bells of Bethlehem

No link for this one, but this year is the first year Tanooki prepared for a nativity play in his pre-school. One evening while he was having a bath and I was playing some music nearby, he asked me to play "ring all the bells, Beth knee hen" and I had no idea what he was going on about. It turns out he had been learning carols in prep for the nativity performance. He sang them to me in the back of the car the following day when I picked him up from school. It wasn't the first time he'd sung with me, but it was the first time he'd ever sung *to* me, making these songs the most important ones I'd heard all year.
