Whenever I get a chance to do a presentation, there are a few things I look forward to:
- Adopting Guy Kawasaki’s 30-20-10 rule (and breaking it within reason)
- Creating something clean, minimal, and moreover not “Death by Powerpoint“
- ‘Owning’ my presentation and topic enough to be able to riff off of a non-prescriptive slide deck, populated by images I’ve drawn myself
I use Paper by FiftyThree to draw the images I’ll be using on my slides. By taking the extra time to illustrate my ideas, I force myself to slow down, take my time and think about whether or not I’m communicating my ideas effectively – without needing to search for stock photography.
I was concerned that the switch to an iPad Mini this year might inhibit the way I draw and use Paper, and I’m glad to discover that’s not the case. I would even go so far to say that I believe it’s more usable for me on a smaller device, although using a stylus helps.
While I might not be much of an illustrator yet, it’s a string I’ve always wanted to add to my bow. This technique helps me combine something I want to be able to do with something I have to do.
I’m pretty pleased with the results so far.
Very cool. Will have to keep that in mind, though your illustration skills far exceed anything I would come up with. I don’t think visually very well at all.
